MFA Program for Writers

Established in 1976 by poet and educator Ellen Bryant Voigt, the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College is the first low-residency MFA Program in the United States and the world. An alternative to the wholly residential workshop, the MFA Program emphasizes student writing, revision, critical thinking, and reading in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and is structured to meet students' needs. The program helps students recognize specific strengths and address specific weaknesses in their creative writing, and encourages students to see themselves as writers and active participants in the creation and study of literature. The program's alumni have contributed to American arts and letters for over 50 years, publishing over 1,500 books. Faculty and students represent expansive diversity in the literary field across genre, translations, craft, and more. The program's enduring legacy continues to inspire writers across the globe through academic rigor and generous community.

“Perhaps the greatest gift the program offers is commitment, an awareness of the writer's evolving creativity and confidence—and the practice, tools and techniques that are vital to clarify each writer's unique vision. Leaving Warren Wilson's MFA program, I carry with me that commitment to this work, this life as an artist, and my own unique voice.”
